There was a dream that we both used to share
And we swore we would never wake
Now the dream's a nightmare,
and the truth to be fair
Is that dreaming was the first mistake.

Spread the good news! European Commissioners yesterday overturned the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) "safe to eat" verdict for three new GM crops -- two varieties of GM maize and one variety of GM potato.

This means the agro-chemical companies can't commercialize these crops in Europe for now. BASF's GM potato was only one European Union vote away from being released commercially. But the Commission has sent it to the back of the authorization queue.

For the first time, the Union's most senior lawmakers have publicly doubted the safety of GM crops. The EU Observer paper explains: "The European Commission normally adopts decisions based on the opinion of EFSA, which anti-GMO campaigners complain bases its investigations on data provided by the GM industry itself. It has always declared any GM crops it has studied to be safe."

On July 23rd the European Commission is expected to vote on proposed legislation to stop illegal logging -- action is vital because 80 percent of the world?s forests have already been destroyed or degraded.

Because there is no law against illegally logged timber in Europe, huge amounts of illegal timber are sold in Europe every day primarily as building materials, or paper products. If you live in Europe you have probably purchased products made with illegal timber. Not only does illegal logging harm indigenous people in the Amazon, Congo Basin and Indonesia, it is also a major factor of deforestation, which is responsible for 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

The European commission has ignored the need for a law for almost five years. Even now European Commission President José Manuel Barroso is being lobbied by companies who profit from illegal timber to reject legislation.

Public pressure is absolutely essential now to urge the Commission to protect the forests and the climate.

"The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) is promoting and funding agrofuel monocultures across Latin America. This is being done under the Bank’s Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative, even though agrofuel monocultures are clearly unsustainable and make climate change considerably worse.
Agrofuel expansion in Guatemala is linked to human rights abuses, to indigenous peoples loss of their land and rights and to serious environmental destruction.
Rights Action is therefore calling for the IADB to immediately suspend all support and funding for agrofuels in Guatemala. Please sign the letter below which will be sent to the IADB and which supports this appeal."

Just saw the video clip and signed the petitition. It really is a lovely videoclip. I saw that Greenpeace is working with Avaaz on this one. I looked at what Avaaz does as I wasn't familiar with their work  and I noticed this petition against Uganda's anti- homosexuality bill

http://www.avaaz.org/en/uganda_for_tolerance/

In Uganda they are actually trying to pass a law which will allow them to imprison homosexual people just because they are homosexual!I couldn't believe my eyes!|At first they didn't want to imprison them, they wanted to give them the death penalty!
We really have to stop this.
